Every time I head home for a little family gathering, I make it a point to take time for myself to unwind and relax before heading back to the mainland. On my recent trip home, I decided to take a little flight out to the Island of Hawaii and relax in the Kona area of the island. The flight was less than 45 minutes, and it was smooth flying over to the Big Island.
It was a spontaneous short trip and it was well worth it. Why have the visitors’ to the islands enjoy Hawaii. For once, I wanted to be a “visitor” or “tourist” to where I grew up. It was incredible. I really appreciated the short getaway. I ended up staying at a well known resort hotel called the Royal Kona Resort located right in the Kailua-Kona town. The hotel was filled with historical references, it sort of felt like I was staying at museum setting, with all of the portraits of Hawaii royalty, historical information, and the backdrop to the resort was beachfront. I couldn’t ask for more.
The couple days I was there, I enjoyed relaxing at poolside, having a drink to having a tropical cocktail, of course a Mai Tai drink at sunset. In addition, I explored the little town of Kailua – Kona, visiting historical buildings, all walkable from the hotel.

To top off my stay, I took in a sunset Luau called the Voyagers of the Pacific. I got a chance to meet people from other states like from Alabama and Texas. All enjoying themselves with the food, hula dance show, and overall setting. That evening, there was a slight passing of island showers but not enough to dampen the luau experience. I’m glad I did it. My only regret is I chatted with people at my table and didn’t realize all the desserts were gone. Oh well, it was good overall. The evening turned out to be a wonderful finish with the expected fire baton dance from the Hawaiian dancers. I feel bad I don’t know the exact interpretation of the fire dance, but the show was mesmerizing to witness. I took the initiative to ask my table mates if they wanted to join me for a nightcap at a neighboring resort bar called Huggos. All joined me, it was really nice to finish the night before resorting back to my room.
Overall, I definitely will go back, it was a so needed trip before heading back home to Oahu and then continue back to San Francisco. If you have not visited this part of the islands, it’s a definite must try. It helped lower my heart rate and take in the slow pace living for just a couple of days. Good call for self care and reboot. Kona, I’ll be back!
